Please feel free to contact us via email at info@khmerforkhmer.org with any questions regarding volunteer opportunities at KFKO. This is a great opportunity to experience Cambodia from a totally different side! How far is the Khmer For Khmer School from Siem Reap? The school is approximately 3 kilometres (1 mile) from the centre of Siem Reap. It takes approximately 15 minutes to get to KFKO school from the centre by bicycle.
How would I get to school every day?
As a visitor you cannot hire a motorbike in Siem Reap so you would need a driver. The cost for a driver would be between $4 – $8 a day. It is possible to make a deal with a driver if you are planning on using his services for over a week, which could bring the cost down slightly.
A cheaper alternative would be to cycle. Buying or renting a bicycle is cheap and the terrain is rather flat. We would recommend that you bring a helmet with you as a precaution, as road safety standards in Cambodia unfortunately are not on par with western standards.
What are the facilities like at the school?
The school has 4 open air classrooms with wooden bench desks and a plastic tarpaulin roof. Electricity is strung to the classrooms outside to allow evening classes to be conducted.
How many students are there?
There are approximately 125 to 130 students, all of whom live either at our orphanage or in the surrounding villages and either walk or cycle to school. As with the rest of Cambodian schools, the students attend school either in the morning or afternoon so at any time of class, there are approximately 20 students at the school.
What hours will I be working? The school can be very flexible in accommodating you, whether you want to volunteer full or part time. It is simply a case of sitting down with the teachers and determining a suitable schedule. |
